Stas was my friend

Stas was my friend. I didn’t see him that often or even keep up with him on a run, but he was my friend.

The last time I saw Stas was a few weeks before his passing. He and I and another good runner friend of ours, Jake, met one Sunday morning for coffee. None of us ran that morning. Just three friends getting together.

We talked about many things. I particularly found it interesting to discuss politics with Stas; his vast knowledge was incredible. Stas had strong intelligent opinions, yet he showed patience, always allowing you to express yours, even if he disagreed. A gentleman was Stas.

On this morning, I particularly remember his excitement for the racecar driving lessons he was taking with his daughter. (He always beamed when he talked about his wife and daughter). I’ve never been very interested in cars, but after listening to his enthusiasm, I was ready to sign up myself. As we left each other to go on with our day, we all hugged. I will forever remember that morning.

I have thought about Stas often since his death. I will always feel sad that he is gone and I will always miss his presence. But I also realize we can still learn from him. I understand more than ever life can be very fragile. It is so important to live life to the fullest, and to appreciate your surroundings, your family and your friend’s everyday. This is what he would have wanted and this is how he lived.
